Kapilvastu: Peace Vs Problem?

Posted by worldamity on May 18, 2010

By Devika Poudel, USA

I have been here in USA for 5 years working as photographer and during my stay in this country I have seen lots of Buddhists from all around the world most of the days. During my communication with them I realized that even the Buddhists do not know the real birthplace of Gautam Buddha and it gave me unexpected surprise. When I was in Nepal I had thinking that Nepal is famous in the world because of Gautam Buddha and Mt. Everest. But from my experience here in USA, I am forced to remember Bhupi Sherchan’s poem. This is so sinful to us.

One day I met 75 years old lady. She came to make some photo prints in my work palace. Her nationality was Vietnamese but she has been to America for long time. From her photos I could guess that she was Buddhist and, therefore, asked her whether she was Buddhist. After her positive answer I asked whether she knows the birthplace of Buddha. Her answer was ‘India’. I told her that the birthplace of Buddha was not India, but Read the rest of this entry »

Hinduism and Buddhism

Posted by worldamity on May 17, 2010

By Dirgha Raj Prasai [1]

Nepal is the pious Hindu and Buddha country in the lapse of the Himalayas, which is beautiful, quiet, the birth place of Buddha and origin of Hinduism. Besides being the country of Everest it is equally popular with its diverse cultural values. This is the land where civilization began and is also known as the country of ‘SANGRILA.’ Nepal is as holy place to Hindus & Buddhists, as Mecca for Muslims and Jerusalem to Jews and Christians.

The religious structure of Nepalese society is formally Hindu; but here and only here the interplay of peoples and their religious traditions has produced a rich fusion of Hindu and Buddhist faiths. It is common for both Hindus and Buddhists to worship at the same shrine, for many gods and saints are cross-over, often known by a different name but holding the same attributes. The original inhabitants of the valley were animists, a tradition which survives in the multitude of spirits, demons, local deities, and stones which receive dutiful worship to this day. Hindu and Buddhist traditions adapted from the pre-existing animist practices and from each other. Indeed, in the medieval period, when both religions’ practice adopted mystical, Tantric traditions, they were almost indistinguishable from each other. Nepal’s History and Religions Nepal is a rich and complex mix of different cultures and traditions, melded over thousands of years into a unique whole. For the western traveler there is much that is familiar, and many surprises. Family and religion are of paramount importance, and are constantly reflected throughout the culture. Nepal moves to a different rhythm than the West. The notes here are meant only to tantalize you into visiting this amazing place. Read the rest of this entry »

Read the rest of this entry »

Kapilvastu Day Movement Global Committee Formed

Posted by worldamity on May 11, 2010

As part of the World Peace Movement, Nepalese people living in different parts of the world last year decided to commemorate Lumbini and Kapilavastu, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, by observing Kapilvastu Day as a global holiday in order to spread the Buddha’s peace and nonviolence messages all over the world. The Buddha is revered as a Messenger of Peace. He is also known as the Light of Asia who is actually the Light of the world as his message of peace and nonviolence has become more relevant as the world is facing the problems of violence today. The world today has become more violent than ever before. Therefore, we have decided to spread the messages of the Buddha all over the world by observing Kapilvastu Day every year.

Originally, on December 1, 1896, Dr Anton Führer, a German archaeologist, had discovered the Buddha’s birthplace when he found the Asoka Pillar at Lumbini.  Even though this site was first discovered by Khadga Shamsher Rana before Führer had reached the site but Führer is credited for this discovery as he brought it into light and made it known to the international community. TILAURAKOT: THE TRUE AND ONLY CONTENDER FOR KAPILAVASTU

Posted by worldamity on May 8, 2010

[Its periphery has wide brick ramparts and moat all around clearly making it a fortress town. With its layers of habitation proven to go back to 11th-8th century BC and its last built phase ending about 2nd century AD in Kushana period both by Indian Gangetic archeological nanogram comparision using PGW (Painted Grey Ware Culture) and NBP ware (Northern Black Polished Ware Culture) finds as well as C-14 dating and ramparts and moats making it a fortress town as described in Buddhist literature, Tilaurakot is the true and only contender for Kapilavastu.]

By Sudarshan Raj Tiwari[1]

Dear Friends at The Himalayan Voice,

The faithful will continue to claim and feel closeness to the life of Lord Buddha as long as life remains a play of birth, old age, disease and death. Occasional expansion of the idea should be expected but Mr. Terence Phelps is different. He starts by presenting himself like an investigator of forgery of Fuhrer but shows his true colors in his concluding paragraphs where he appeals to Indian nationalism and sectarian lobby rather than to logic.
Except it seems for Mr Phelps and the like, there should be no dispute that Siddhartha Gautam, the Buddha was born at Lumbini of Rupandehi district in Nepal. As for Mr Phelps, when he visited Lumbini in 1994, he could have seen much more than the signboard at Mayadevi temple. The archeological excavation of the Mayadevi temple started in 1992 was already in an advanced state and he could have seen the foundations of the eastern end of the pre-Ashokan brikshya-chaitya temple. Within that year’s archaeological season, the marker stone was exposed and several stages of construction spanning at least 1000 years preceding the seventh century AD Gupta phase saptaratha temple, each structure marking the birth spot as precisely as marked by the Nativity image were opened. Amazingly, even the sacred pond revealed two spring sources, one of warm and another of cold water, (see Lumbini by Basanta Bidari, 2002, page 156 for a drawing of the pond and wells therein) as if to retell the tale told to Huen Tsang. The account of Huen Tsang fits Lumbini quite well once we take the current sacred tank as the springs that came forth when the Lord was born and place the old sacred pond where Mayadevi took her auspicious bath, the one Huen Tsang saw, to its west. The study of charcoal obtained from below the brick plinth of the marker stone has been established to belong to the root of a Sal tree, Dipterocarpaceaetment Shorea. The Asoka tree in Huen Tsang’s account was to the west of Asoka pillar and spaces east of it were built over with stupas and the brikshya-chaitya in the intervening millennium.

Posted by worldamity on May 6, 2010

By निर्मल श्रेष्ठ

Read the rest of this entry »

Buddhism and Peace

Posted by worldamity on May 5, 2010

By Jan Willis [1]

I. The Basics of Buddhism

Between 563 BCE and 483 BCE there lived in the southern regions of modern day Nepal, a man named Siddhartha Gautama who had been born a prince of the Sakya clan but who, at the age of thirty-five, after meditating and attaining a state called “Enlightenment,” began teaching a completely new doctrine in India. That doctrine has since come to be known as Buddhism. At the end of his life, the “Buddha,” as his followers have ever since referred to him, said that he had spent the previous forty-five years teaching only two things: suffering, and its cessation. Indeed, his emphasis upon the suffering inherent in samsara (literally, the realm of “continual going”) has caused many over the centuries to view the tradition as pessimistic. In reality, the Buddha preached a doctrine which demands an in depth analysis of suffering and its causes as a means of bringing about suffering’s end and, therefore, of ushering in a new and lasting peace, tranquility and insightfulness. Who and What Is Buddha, Really?

Posted by worldamity on May 3, 2010

By Lama Surya Das [1]

Last night PBS aired The Buddha, a new TV special about the sage’s life, impact, and particular relevance to our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion. By filmmaker David Grubin, the documentary features the work of some of the world’s greatest artists and sculptors, who across two millennia have depicted the Buddha’s life through art rich in beauty and complexity. Moreover, this film points out how we may integrate enlightening wisdom and mindfulness into our daily lives today, which is the main point of Buddhism in practice, for the Buddha himself exhorted us not to worship Buddha but to become more Buddha-like and to be a Buddha.

But who and what is Buddha, really? The stone Buddha outside in the garden is not the real Buddha, obviously, any more than a Jesus statue is the deathless Christos. The Buddha is actually an archetype representing enlightenment, an icon symbolizing inner wisdom, a pointer towards the possibility of a level of spiritual awakening embodying the fullest actualized potential of human beings.
