Even after Bedi Twitter apology, the first “Buddha” serial with misinformation

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on October 20, 2013

By Ram Kumar Shrestha

Buddha_Zee_TVCreating misinformation on Buddha birthplace from Indian side is not a new issue and Buddha born in NepalNepali side is very furious from this kind of regular drama and attempt to take an unnecessary advantage from Buddha’s Global importance. A recent Hindi language television serial, “Buddha” launched by Zee TV Network already frustrated Nepalese by Indian over interference.

In reaction Nepalese did not limit them only in social medias, but also on September 13, staged demonstrations in the streets of Kathmandu against the serial, Nepal Cable TV Association blocked the channel when the new series on the life of Buddha premiered on Sunday (Sept. 8) and which prompted the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu to post hastily the next day, September 14th, on its Facebook wall, “The question of where Lord Buddha was born was settled over 2000 years ago when Emperor Ashoka installed the pillar with his inscription in Lumbini. Buddha was born in Lumbini, which is in Nepal.”  And also actor and TV presenter and commentator Kabir Bedi Twitter apology appeared, “Yes, my friends, I mis-spoke. Forgive me. Lord Buddha was certainly born in Lumbini, Nepal. My apologies to all whose feelings were hurt.” And this issue got space in International papers like Huffington Post and Washington Post as well.

Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day Movement wrote letter to Chairman of Cabinet of Nepal Khil Raj Regmi, however; some Movement activists informed that when they had gone through the serials on line specially the first serial was very embarrassing because of not corrected misinformation. This clearly shows that Movement guess and writing letter to Chairman of Cabinet of Nepal were correct. And wrote another letter to him as our guess was correct and the scenario is changed now.  Read the rest of this entry »

Press Release over Mahabodhi blasts

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 8, 2013

Press Release over Mahabodhi blasts.

Nine low-intensity blasts took place early on Sunday morning – leaving two monks injured – in quick succession at the 1,500-year-oldbodhgaya Mahabodhi temple, which is annually visited by millions of pilgrims from all over the world.

The temple’s sanctum sanctorum and the Bodhi Tree, under which Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment, did not suffer any damage in the blasts which shook the holy town.

Anil Goswami, Union Home Secretary of India, said in New Delhi that serial explosions inside and outside Mahabodhi Temple complex were a terror attack and NIA and NSG teams have been sent for post-blasts investigations. Security has been beefed at the temple and adjoining areas, Bihar police chief DGP Abhayanand told reporters, adding CCTV footage was being examined for leads to the terrorists.

The explosions, the first of its type to target the town and the temple, a UNESCO heritage site, took place between 5:30 and 5:58 am. The explosives were set off by timers.

Buddha is revered as a Messenger of Peace. He is known as the Light of Asia but is also the Light of the World as his message of peace and non-violence has become more relevant. “All of us can learn from the Buddha’s spirit of compassion. His timeless teachings can help us to navigate the many global problems we face today. The need for global solidarity may seem like a modern concept, but it is not. More than 2,500 years ago, Buddha taught that nothing exists in isolation, and that all phenomena are interdependent. Just as profoundly, he taught that we cannot be happy as long as others suffer and that when we do reach out, we discover the best in ourselves.” said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Chris Demuth Advocates “Buddha was born in Nepal”

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on March 15, 2013

Chris Demuth talks about Fareed Zakaria’s book The Post-American World where Zakaria is giving absolutely wrong information on Buddha’s birthplace and Mr Demuth advocates not buying the book as it does lie. He was surprised with India’s claim that Buddha was born in India.  Mr Demuth also suggests signing the petition to advocate Buddha was born in Nepal and not in India.

zakaria-book1Fareed Rafiq Zakaria is an Indian-American journalist and author. From 2000 to 2010, he was a columnist for Newsweek and editor of Newsweek International. In 2010 he became editor-at-large of Time. He is the host of CNN‘s Fareed Zakaria GPS. He is also a frequent commentator and author about issues related to international relations, trade, and American foreign policy.

Zakaria is the author of few books including The Post-American World. His last two books have both been New York Times bestsellers, and have been translated into over 25 languages.

Fareed Zakaria opened up about his plagiarism scandal in an interview with the New York Times.  He got into severe trouble after he was found to have lifted a paragraph from a recent New Yorker article for a column in Time. He was suspended from that magazine and from CNN.

Nepal was promoted in Pako Festa, Australia

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on February 23, 2013

Parade

23 February 2013 Geelong, Australia: Geelong, the second biggest city of Victoria in Australia, transformed into a multicultural melting pot as thousands flocked to the thirty-first annual Pako Festa. It incorporated an extravagant street parade featuring around ninety floats and hundreds of performers representing forty-five affiliated ethnic communities and around sixty other community groups and organizations. The street was lined with stalls selling traditional foods and arts and crafts, and nine separate stages in the precinct offer performances of music and dance as well as interactive workshops and exhibitions. Pako Festa has become Victoria’s premier multicultural event, attended by well over hundred thousand people in each of the last three years and estimated to inject close to $2.5 million dollars into the local economy just over the course of the day itself.

Parade2

Because of very nominal Nepalese in Geelong, Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day Movement Global Coordinator Mr. Ram Kumar Shrestha requested other Nepalese communities living in other cities to use Pako Festa as opportunity to promote Nepal as the country of the Buddha and the Mt. Everest. His idea was for Nepal to take advantage of this big gathering from different counties to try to dismiss misinformation of Buddha’s birthplace. Nepalese Association of Victoria President Bom Yonjan, Nepali Sanchar Managing Director Pramod K Soni and Namaste Nepal News Chief Editor Sabin Thapa, Geelong Nepalese Association and Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day Movement Victoria Committee were active for necessary input and mobilized community members to participate in the festival to promote Nepal as the country of the Buddha and the Mt. Everest. Nepalese communities promoted Nepal through flags, banners, Nepali music, dance, Nepali dress and stalls. Miss Nepal Australia 2012 Deepashree Shah represented our country with a Kumari dance.

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 22, 2012

Read the rest of this entry »

Buddhism: Time to Catalyze World Peace

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 1, 2012

| by Ram Kumar Shrestha
Kindness, compassion and empathy are the synonyms of Buddhism. The eyes of Buddha are the insignia of love. Lumbini is the place where mind and heart take pleasure in for peace. This is the land when eyes are closed, heart opens. And Lumbini symbolized ultimate peace and harmony. This could be the right time to work together to declare Lumbini a World Peace City to catalyze World Peace in the present critical world situation.
( May 01, 2012, Kathmandu, Sri Lanka Guardian) While the world is preparing to celebrate 2556th Buddha Purnima (Vesak), it is facing Global warming, political instability, recession, terrorism, disaster etc. as major problems and the ultimate source of these problems is not external – it is us and only us, our current lifestyles, our historical choices, our way of thinking and doing with full of selfishness and our future ambitions. We ourselves, therefore, must be the solution. Now the world is already in very crucial moment and this provides opportunity as well to the world leaders, scientists and humanitarian activists to show their capability and broadness and prove themselves as historic persons. One of the most important questions we are facing today due to the reality we are facing in the name of development is: “Do we really love our generations or not?” This is already clear that just the continuation of existing development trend without drastic changes could destroy the world very soon and we, hence, must have new perspectives to bring everything in the right track. Irrespective of interest everybody has to read, see, watch and listen to unwanted news full of violence, crime, rape, hunger, accident, war, epidemic, disaster etc in everyday life. However, dedicated persons and organizations are still optimistic for a better and peaceful globe. Buddhism is considered not only as one of the world major religions but also as science and not facing any debate. This, therefore, could play important role in World peace in the present world context.
Problems do not arise from those who do not know, but from those who know and pretend not to know. Due to this attitude, the world is in crisis. Until we purge ourselves of these problems nothing will happen on the journey to create a wonderful and safe world for future generations. Most people think seriously about their responsibilities and rights but not about their duty to others. So many use their freedom to violate others and deny them of their freedom. This attitude could be the result of mediocre thinking, selfishness and not respecting others.
Kindness, compassion and empathy are the synonyms of Buddhism. The eyes of Buddha are the insignia of love.

Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day Movement Global Committee

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 2, 2011

Latest Update:

As part of the World Peace Movement, Nepalese people living in different parts of the world last year decided to commemorate Lumbini and Kapilavastu, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, by observing Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day (before Kapilvastu Day) as a global holiday in order to spread the Buddha’s peace and nonviolence messages all over the world. The Buddha is revered as a Messenger of Peace. He is also known as the Light of Asia who is actually the Light of the world as his message of peace and nonviolence has become more relevant as the world is facing the problems of violence today. The world today has become more violent than ever before. Therefore, we have decided to spread the messages of the Buddha all over the world by observing Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day every year.

Originally, on December 1, 1896, Dr Anton Führer, a German archaeologist, had discovered the Buddha’s birthplace when he found the Asoka Pillar at Lumbini.  Even though this site was first discovered by Khadga Shamsher Rana before Führer had reached the site but Führer is credited for this discovery as he brought it into light and made it known to the international community.

The Asoka Pillar is the most important evidence that Buddha was born in Lumbini. Therefore, it was decided to observe December 1 as Lumbini-Kapilavastu Day. The historic Kapilavastu, located close to Lumbini, is considered to be another holy pilgrimage for the Buddhists since it was the place where the Buddha grew up and which he later renounced seeking to understand the cause of human sufferings. The result of years of excavations and researches by numerous national and international teams has been that Tilaurakot is the historic Kapilvastu which UNESCO should certify as another World Heritage, next to Lumbini.
