I bring with me the message of peace and non-violence fromLumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, the apostle of peace, and the greetings and best wishes from the Government and people of Nepal. Nepal has an unflinching faith inthe principles and purposes of the United Nations as enshrined in its Charter.Nepal upholds the centrality and indispensability of the United Nations in forging global peace and security, development and humanfreedom as well as its role in the promotion of multilateralism befitting the need of our age.

Allow me to congratulate you, Mr. President, on your assumption of the Presidency of the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. I repose full confidence in you to steer the deliberations of the Assembly to a fruitful conclusion and assure you ofour full cooperation in the discharge of your important responsibilities.

I take this opportunity to extend sincere thanks to the outgoing President, His Excellency Mr. VukJeremić, for having successfully presided over the Sixty-seventh session of the Assembly.

I would like to express my sincere appreciationto His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations for his able and visionary leadership and excellent reports on issues before the Assembly.

Mr. President,

It is an irony that one eighth of world population has to live without enough food at a time when 150 percent of the earth’s annual regenerative capacity is being consumed in total. And, nearly one billion people will still be forced to live in extreme poverty by 2015. Looking at this unfair and unjust scenario, one can hardly envision global sustainability without a system of an economic growth and development that ensures the progress and wellbeing of people on this planet in an equitable, inclusive and judicious manner. We can hardly realize sustainable development when pervasive poverty, unsustainable consumption and production patterns and spiraling environmental degradation are allowed to continue. APECF signs agreement for Greater Lumbini

KATHMANDU, Nov 7: The Chinese international non-government organization (INGO)- Asia Pacific Exchange Cooperation Foundation (APECF) – on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lumbini Development Steering Committee (LDSC) for the development and preservation of all aspects of ´Greater Lumbini´.

Executive Vice Chairman of APECF Linus Xiao Wunan and chairman of the LDSC Puspa Kamal Dahal signed the agreement targeting to invest more than US$ 3 billion to develop Lumbini as an international peace city.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, Wunan said further investment in Lumbini depended on the political leadership of Nepal. “We are positive to support it, but it will depend upon the policy of Nepal´s government,” said he. Read the rest of this entry »

Bhattarai sends official invite to Ban

KATHMANDU, MAR 16 – Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Thursday evening sent an official invitation to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to visit Nepal on the last week of April.

Ban will take stock of the peace process and hold discussions on the development of Lumbini during his stay here.

“The government has extended an invitation to Secretary General Ban to attend an international conference on Lumbini development to be held in Lumbini on April 29. Ban’s visit has been fixed for the last week of April,” spokesperson of the Lumbini Development Steering Committee and Nepali Congress leader Minendra Rijal said on Friday after a meeting of the committee. The invitation, a personal note in nature, signed by Bhattarai has been forwarded to Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Gyan Chandra Acharya. UN Gen Secy agrees to support greater Lumbini development

Dahal is in New York as the Chairman of the High Level National Steering Committee for the development of Greater Lumbini, seeking international assistance for the development of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in Rupandehi district, about 300 km southwest of Kathmandu.

During the meeting, Dahal briefed the UN Secretary General about the commitment of the Government of Nepal to develop Lumbini as a world peace city as a pilgrimage and a heritage city with inclusive livelihood programs for the people living around there.

Prachanda explained to Ban Ki-moon that the recently formed High Level National Steering Committee reflects strong and long-term commitment of the Government of Nepal to the preservation and development of all aspects of Greater Lumbini with a
multi-stakeholder approach through national and international support.

While urging Moon to form a broader Lumbini development international committee under his chairmanship, Dahal said, spiritual dimension of Lumbini for world peace fits in very well with the noble ideals of peace and justice of the United Nations.
