Kapilvastu Day Movement Tourism Year Banner

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 30, 2010

The most important responsibility for Kapilvastu Day Movement is to promote Lumbini as pilgrimage and archaeological tourism destination for World Buddhists and followers of new age faith. Kapilvastu Day Movement activities in promoting Lumbini and its surroundings including Tilaurakot and Devdaha would help government of Nepal in implementing its strategies in exploring of new tourism market segments and marketing Nepali destinations on regional markets.

Government of Nepal has set target of increasing number tourists visiting from non-SAARC nations from current level to one million per year. Existing situation must change to if Nepal wants some of the wealthiest people spend their vacation in Nepal. Lumbini can be one of the key attractions that help meeting goals and hence Kapilvastu Day Movement needs to play double role in Nepal Tourism Year 2011.

बुद्ध, तिमी र तिम्रो जन्म देश नेपाल

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 22, 2010

By डा.

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 21, 2010

Read the rest of this entry »

Nepal Tourism Year 2011 and our responsibilities

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 17, 2010

By   Chandra Rai / Bhanu Poudyal*

Background

Nepalis abroad are promoting Nepal through their daily activities and community events. Promotion of Nepal is ongoing process for Nepali Diaspora.  Most of us are involved in promoting Nepal in different fields of our choice. Some of us are involved in promoting national monuments and supporting movements in Nepal for territorial integrity and national independence. Others are dedicated for community and business developments including promotion of trade of Nepali products and tourism. Our involvements in multicultural events are helping promotion of Nepal and integration of our communities in Canadian mainstreams. Thus, the challenge on NRNA is not to promote Nepal, but to channelized our contribution to Nepal to most productive and result oriented sectors.  If we want to get tangible results, we most focus our efforts in specific sectors where our collective synergy meets. In backdrop of Nepal Tourism Year 2011, it is only logical that we consolidate our activities to support this initiation of government of Nepal Read the rest of this entry »

Buddha’s Birthplace Hopes for a New Incarnation

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 10, 2010

By BARRY BEARAK

UMBINI, Nepal — Some 2,500 years ago, on a spring day under a full moon, Siddhartha Gautama was born in  Lumbini.

That time Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala of Nepal, center, marched with religious and political figures from some 30 countries Tuesday at the opening of a two-day conference in Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha.

His mother had gone into labor while on a stroll in a verdant grove, smelling the flowers and listening to the songbirds. The baby would grow up to be the Enlightened One — the Buddha — and this village would become holy soil to millions of Buddhists who, for the most part, would these days never think of coming here.

Situated in the flat, steamy lowlands of southwestern Nepal, Lumbini is not only off the beaten track, it is away from an adequate supply of sewer pipes, telephone lines, electric lights, clean sheets and mosquito control. Thirty years of planning to develop the site have thus far failed to make it the Buddhist counterpart of a Mecca or Jerusalem.

The royal government of Nepal would like to change that. On Tuesday, it convened a two-day conference of religious leaders and political officials from 19 nations, trying to promote Lumbini as “the fountain of world peace” and open the way for a torrent of pilgrims and tourists to this impoverished country of 21 million. The conference began with prayerful chanting, a peace march and a plea for help. “His Majesty’s government will leave no stone unturned to cooperate with individuals, organizations and friendly nations to develop Lumbini into an international complex for all the world human community,” Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala promised. Lord Buddha, Buddhism and its Pervasiveness in the World

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 9, 2010

By Dirgha Raj Prasai*

Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini in the 6th century BC in mid Tarai, Nepal. Nepal has been a pious and holy land for all Buddhists as well as all kinds of religious men and women. Buddha has guided human society on the path of peace, non-violence and prosperous thinking. Gautam Buddha meditated at Sarnath-Banarash and acquired the Light of Knowledge (Mokchya) under the holy fig-tree at Gaya, which is now called Buddha Gaya.

A Nepalese scholar Rupesh Shrestha writes-The term Buddha means “Enlightened One”, and signifies that the person to whom it is applied has solved the riddle of existence, and discovered the doctrine for the cessation of misery. Lord Buddha propounded Hinayana, a simple religion in which he followed to a large extent. This was a direct and simple philosophy that appealed to the masses.

Geographically, historically and politically, Nepal occupies a position in between two great empires of India and China and has drunk deeply from the two culturally rich springs, drawing inspirations from both its grand neighbors, as the political current ebbed or flowed – an influence clearly illustrated in the building styles of Nepal. In addition, there is the religious, cultural and philosophical effect of that great tide of Buddhism, which swept through the continent of Asia.

The descriptions of famous ancient Chinese pilgrims, Huian Tsang (who traveled through India between AD 629 & 645) and Fa Hein (who traveled between AD 400 & AD 414) indicate to this area, saying, ‘Lumbini, where the Lord was born, is a piece of heaven on earth where one could see the snowy mountains amidst a splendid garden embedded with Stupas and monasteries.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Further Development on “The Greedy Buddha” Issue

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 7, 2010

[Here we are going to give further development based on the mails after our 4th of December’s posting on “The Greedy Buddha” issue ]

Letter from BCCUK:

The Proprietor

The Greedy Buddha

144 Wandsworth Bridge Road

Fulham

London

SW6 2UH

Date 04/12/2010

Dear Mr. Ram Thapa,

I am writing to update you with the current situation regarding the Buddhist Community and the issues raised with the name of your restaurant.

I have now sent an email out to all the members to calm them down. In my email, I also expressed that you were sincerely apologetic and wished to take action to rectify this situation as soon as possible.

To start rebuilding your relationship with the community, it would be a good idea for you to write an official letter with your apology and your plan of action. I will then circulate it to all the members who may have been angered and/or offended.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Regards

Subject: RE: ‘ग्रिडी बुद्ध’ नाम बारे

Thank you for your interest in the name of my restaurant, if i look back now i probably could have chosen a different name.

It never occurred to me that some people might not read it in the same context as i do,(also my dry sense of humor does not help), when we chose the name our idea was simple, to put two opposite words together so that it would be obviously silly (or even stupid) to make people smile and remember, but recently a few people have been very upset, and some even threatening which disappoints me, as i have always felt Buddhist are compassionate and peaceful people, but i am more disappointed that it has upset people.

I have been brought up to believe in the saying “sticks and stones” so just because somebody insults me by calling me a name, I don’t believe it makes me that, my wife who was raised as a Buddhist, would say to me that you look with your heart and not your eyes, because your eyes see material things.

I am not a religious person, i do not hate Buddhism or religion have always felt that if i am a good person then that is all I need, and because of that I have respected Buddhism and what they believe.

I am sorry if you or anyone else have been offended, that was never my intention, i will seriously consider this situation and what i have done.

Information about “The Greedy Buddha” restaurant owner commitment:

Dear all,

I am writing to you all regarding the concerns raised over the restaurant named ‘The Greedy Buddha’.

Yesterday, on the 3rd of December, I had a clear conversation with Mr. Ram Thapa, the owner of the restaurant. I highlighted the fact that the name of the restaurant was insensitive, inappropriate, offensive, and devalued the core principles of Buddhism therefore was simply unacceptable! He is now fully aware of the anger, and negative impact it has had on the Buddhist community.

Mr. Ram has now made a promise to change the name of the restaurant as soon as he can. He stated his intentions were not to cause any offense or be insensitive; it was a matter of ignorance on his behalf, for which he is truly sorry. Mr. Thapa also asked for forgiveness from the community.

I would therefore like to request you all not to send Mr. Thapa any more angry emails. He has made it clear to me that he intends to take action as soon as possible. The best approach and an approach most reflective of our Buddhist beliefs is one of a peaceful nature. I propose we accept his apology, and give him a realistic and reasonable matter of time to change the name.

If however, appropriate further action is not taken, we can re-approach the issue with more pressure! But for now, such measures seem unnecessary!

Regards

Kaji Sherpa
Chairman of the Buddhist Community Centre UK

Copper load of this! Company digging mine in Afghanistan unearths 2,600-year-old Buddhist monastery

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 4, 2010

Daily Mail

A Chinese company digging an unexploited copper mine in Afghanistan has unearthed ancient statues of Buddha in a sprawling 2,600-year-old Buddhist monastery.

Archaeologists are rushing to salvage what they can from a major 7th century B.C. religious site along the famed Silk Road connecting Asia and the Middle East.

The ruins, including the monastery and domed shrines known as ‘stupas,’ will likely be largely destroyed once work at the mine begins.

The ruins were discovered as labourers excavated the site on behalf of the Chinese government-backed China Metallurgical Group Corp, which wants to develop the world’s second largest copper mine, lying beneath the ruins.

Hanging over the situation is the memory of the Buddhas of Bamiyan — statues towering up to 180 feet high in central Afghanistan that were dynamited to the ground in 2001 by the country’s then-rulers, the Taliban, who considered them symbols of paganism. Read the rest of this entry »

The Greedy Buddha?

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 4, 2010

[This mail was received by mail and requested to circulate. And thought could have meaning to post and posting the received mail without edit]

Dear proprietor,

I was passing through Wandsworth Bridge Road in Fulham recently and to my horror my wondering eye fixed on to something so appalling, which was the name of your restaurant, “Greedy Buddha”. I am a Buddhist myself, and like millions of other Buddhists all around the world who worships Lord Buddha and follow his sacred teachings, I was shocked and saddened by your insensitivity and sheer audacity to choose a name for your restaurant that insults all Buddhists. I am sure whoever the imbecile came up with this name thought that this is a cool and hip thing. But if anyone who has an ounce of knowledge on this great religion and its master would know how wrong and appalling this is. The truth of the matter is that the basic Buddha’s teaching is based on giving up all worldly pleasures and materials, and finally reaching the ultimate bliss of Nirvana. The Buddha is someone who conquered the world giving up all desires including greed and lust.
